The Titanic is a 1997 film about the sinking of the RMS Titanic on April 15, 1912. It stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Kate Winslet and Billy Zane. James Cameron wrote and directed the movie. After the launch from Southampton, England, a fire breaks out in one of its coal bunkers and slowly burns into the night before it's discovered by a passing member of its crew. The next day at 11:40 am, while off Newfoundland in Canada's Grand Banks region, 2237 passengers and crew--the last being seen on this earth--leave this world for eternity when their ship sinks beneath them. In 1912 wealthy financiers J. P. Morgan, Benjamin Guggenheim, Isidor Straus and John Jacob Astor IV chartered the RMS Titanic for a voyage from Southampton, England, to America. The ship leaves Southampton with its complement of 2205 passengers and 891 crew. The first class passengers include: During a stop in Queenstown, Ireland on April 10th, a lookout reports an iceberg directly ahead. First officer Murdoch orders the ship to steer hard to starboard (right) to avoid the obstacle. But it is too late as the iceberg grazes the starboard side of the bow above water level. The collision shatters six of the "watertight" compartments and gives the ocean a route to pour in. The water rises and the ship starts sinking bow first by the head. Murdoch gives the order to "abandon ship", and many passengers start to panic and run for their lives. A few manage to survive by climbing up on deck, including two men who climb onto a lifeboat, but more than 1500 people die. These scenes are shown in a famous Director's cut version of the movie, with different angles that had been edited out of earlier versions. The film then shifts forward in time from April 15th, 1912 at 11:40 am until closing arguments in late April 1996 in New York City. The first part of this segment shows the story of different people on the ship, all of whom eventually come together to meet their deaths. The film's central figures are three young first-class women: The second half follows the efforts of Brock Lovett, an insurance fraud investigator for "The London Underwriters", who salvage artifacts from the sunken ship. He is aided by his team:Lovett's research leads him to Rose Calvert, who is now an old woman and a widow living in a retirement home. She had been the last person to elude the ship on deck, when she grabbed onto a rope ladder hanging out of one of lifeboats. Lovett visits her in hospital, where she recites the exact words that were said when the orders were given to abandon ship. Lovett pays her a visit at her home and meets her granddaughter, who tells him their story of survival. According to James Cameron, "The Titanic" was "a story about friendship and faith. cfa1e77820
