The acid gland is a name for a pair of glands on the throat of some birds, found especially in the blue tit (Cyanistes caeruleus) of Europe, but also in the koel (Eudynamys scolopacea) of Australia and the red junglefowl (Gallus gallus) of the Palaearctic and Nearctic regions. They secrete a yellow acid when stimulated. It was first described in 1842 by Thomas Henry Huxley.
The glands are located on the sub-mandibular lymph nodes, close to the common carotid artery. They are not homologous to the salivary glands of mammals, but the secretions from them are secreted at the same time as saliva, albeit the saliva is of a yellow colour.
The function of the glands is to digest dead matter, as well as to deter consumption by predators. In most other birds, the glands of the trachea function in a similar way.
The glands may be associated with the central nervous system to identify the level of stress in the individual, as has been suggested in parrots, cockatoos and pheasants.
